Interested in building an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) on your property? The City of Dublin has taken a number of steps to make the building of an ADU much easier for homeowners. The City's ADU website is a one-stop shop for information and resources to assist residents.
Two key resources on the website include an ADU Manual and prototype plans. The ADU Manual is a how-to guide for building ADUs, designed for homeowners who are not familiar with the development process. The City also prepared eight different permit-ready ADU prototype plans. This includes five ADUs designed to be either attached to the primary dwelling or detached, and three plans for converting a garage to an ADU, ranging in size from 224 to 909 square feet.
An ADU is a residential unit that provides independent living facilities that include a kitchen, sleeping, and bathroom facilities. ADUs can provide living spaces for elderly parents or grown children, or a steady source of rental income. To incentivize ADUs, the City has:
- Streamlined the review process;
- Modified the development standards, such as parking;
- Developed prototype plans;
- Prepared an ADU Manual, a how-to guide for ADUs; and
- Waived permit fees for certain ADUs.
