The Dublin City Council recently adopted the “Climate Action Plan 2030 and Beyond” (CAP 2030). The CAP 2030 is a plan that will guide Dublin toward a greener future and provide a roadmap to reach carbon neutrality by 2045. Dublin aims to emit only as much carbon into the atmosphere as can be absorbed by carbon sinks, such as plants and soil. In addition to eliminating carbon emissions, the CAP 2030 envisions Dublin as having a future with a vibrant economy, healthy residents, resilient ecosystems, and more.
The CAP 2030 lays out a set of strategies and measures that will guide Dublin toward reaching ambitious carbon emission reduction goals. The keystone strategy is to provide 100% carbon-free electricity to every electricity user in Dublin through East Bay Community Energy. Switching to carbon-free energy sources such as wind, solar, and hydropower will greatly reduce Dublin’s emissions. The other four strategies tackle climate action through building energy efficiency, transportation, land use, waste management, and municipal leadership. In creating the updated Climate Action Plan, the City of Dublin reached out to community members and business owners, who provided feedback through meetings and online surveys.
