Traffic Signals & Street Lighting Maintenance
Functions & Partnerships
The Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining traffic signals and the street lighting on public streets. Traffic signals are maintained through a contract with
Alameda County. The contract provides for regular preventive maintenance procedures and any repairs that are needed. Traffic signal timing is performed by the City's traffic engineer.
Street Lighting Maintenance
Street lighting is also maintained through a contract with Alameda County. The City periodically conducts outage surveys on major streets but depends largely on its residents to call if neighborhood lights are out or are cycling on and off.
Covering the Costs
The cost of maintaining street lights are paid for through street light maintenance
assessment districts.
Taping Items to Streetlight Poles Prohibited
As part of the maintenance program, the City also periodically paints the street light poles on some arterial streets and residential neighborhoods. Taping garage sale signs or other items to the street light poles is prohibited by the City's sign ordinance and also damages the paint on the poles. The City appreciates your cooperation in not taping signs to the poles.
