Top Ten Energy-Saving Tips for Your Home

The City of Dublin encourages everyone to reduce their carbon footprint.  Here are a few great energy-saving tips to help you do just that. Spread the word!

  1. Replace standard light bulbs with Energy Star-rated compact fluorescent bulbs. (Tip: replace high-use lights first.) Even better, consider replacing your highest-use lights with Energy StarLED bulbs. According to the EPA, if every American home replaced just one light bulb with an Energy Star light bulb, we would save enough energy to light three million homes for a year, save about $600 million in annual energy costs, and prevent nine billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions per year, equivalent to those from about 800,000 cars.
  2. Get an energy audit to see where your home is wasting energy. Seal and insulate your home. Caulk windows and doors, seal and insulate air ducts, and add insulation for increased efficiency.   3. Heat and cool your house wisely - clean or change air filters regularly and adjust your thermostat - lower in winter, higher in summer. Purchase a programmable thermostat to save even more.
  4. Wash clothes in cold, not hot water. Consider purchasing an energy-efficient front-load washer/dryer. They save water, soap, and energy. (Check with Zone 7 and PG&E for possible rebates before you buy.)  Also, use a clothes dryer rack or clothesline to dry your clothes. (Tip: drop them in the dryer for 10 minutes after drying on the rack, they will come out just as soft and wrinkle-free as if you had run them in the dryer for 50 minutes or more.)
  5. Run the dishwasher only when full and turn off the heat cycle to air dry your dishes. Generally, dishwashers use less hot water than washing by hand.
  6. When replacing appliances or electronics, purchase energy-efficient models - visit EnergyStar, and click on products for more information.  Also, check out PG&E/rebates before you buy.
  7. Eat local foods, in season. By adding more local in-season fruits and vegetables to your diet, you are saving loads of energy.  An added bonus is that local produce is fresher, tastier, and more nutritious than produce that comes from far away.  From start to finish, vegetable and fruit production uses less energy than meat production does.  Grow your own food if possible, for even more benefits.

  9. Start a new family tradition - "Weekly Game Night" - no t.v. or electronics. Here’s another idea - read a book or catch up on magazines once a week instead of watching t.v.?
  10. Use less water. Did you know that almost 20% of the total energy use in California is for water?
